A letter from Harper & Matilda – Everyday Comfort Tees
She has a drawer full of t-shirts and nothing she wants to put on.
Not because she doesn't care how she looks. Because every one of them clings, rides up or bares her arms.
On the six things we looked for before these tees came into the store, how they compare to what you have been wearing, and why they are from A$54.95 in our Pre-Black Friday Sale.

We are Harper and Matilda, two sisters, and we opened our boutique in Melbourne in 2010 with one idea: that a woman should never have to choose between comfortable and beautiful.
The place that idea gets tested hardest isn't a wedding or a night out. It's an ordinary Tuesday. Coffee with a friend, the shops, picking up the grandchildren from school. The days you just want to get dressed and get on with it.
There are two kinds of t-shirts waiting for you, and you know both. There is the comfortable one, and it looks it: shapeless, a bit faded, fine for the garden and nowhere else. And there is the one that looks neat on the hanger, cut close and short in the sleeve, so it hugs every part of you that you'd rather it didn't.
So every morning a woman does the sums. She pulls on the tired one, and then a cardigan over the top to hide it, even when it's warm. And then she is comfortable, and covered, and a little invisible.
We never accepted that a woman had to choose.
Our Everyday Comfort Tees are our answer. Two simple shapes, the Soft Everyday Comfort Tee with a round neck and the Soft Classic V-Neck Tee, in single colours from White and Black to Sage Green, Berry Red and Fuchsia, and in sizes S | AU 10 to 3XL | AU 20. There were six things we would not do without.
1A relaxed fit that skims, because a tee shouldn't remind you of your tummy all day

Most t-shirts are cut for a body that doesn't have a middle. They look fine standing in front of the mirror, and then you sit down for coffee and spend the whole time tugging the front away from your stomach and checking it hasn't crept up at the back.
Every tee in this collection has a relaxed, comfortable fit that is not clingy. It falls from the shoulders and skims over you instead of holding on. You stop checking yourself in shop windows and start enjoying the coffee.
2Half sleeves that cover your upper arms, because you shouldn't need a cardigan in November

So many t-shirts have little cap sleeves that stop right where you'd want them to keep going. And so the cardigan comes out, on a warm spring morning, in the garden, at the shops. It's not about the weather. It's about the arms.
These tees have half sleeves for light upper-arm coverage, finishing around the elbow with a small turned cuff. Lift your arm to the clothesline or reach for the top shelf and you are still covered. You can leave the cardigan on the hook.
3A round neck or a V, because you know which one suits you

A neckline makes more difference than most people think. Too high and tight, and a tee looks like something you'd wear to paint the fence. Too low, and you spend the day adjusting it every time you bend down to the grandchildren.
So we chose two. The Soft Everyday Comfort Tee has a classic round neckline that sits neatly. The Soft Classic V-Neck Tee has a flattering V that gently elongates. This was the one we thought hardest about. Pick the one you feel like yourself in, or have both.
4A gently curved hem, because you shouldn't have to tuck a tee in to look neat

A straight, boxy hem worn out over your jeans can look like you forgot to finish getting dressed. Tucked in, it pulls at the waist and puts everything on show. Neither feels right, so a lot of us give up on the simple tee-and-jeans altogether.
These tees have a gently curved hem made for an easy, untucked look. It sits softly over the hips and finishes the outfit for you. That's the trick. Jeans, a tee and a basket on your arm, and you look put together for the market.
5S to 3XL, one price, because a good basic shouldn't stop at a 14

There's a particular disappointment in finding a nice plain tee and discovering it stops at an L, or that the bigger sizes cost more. We have never understood a shop that does that and then wonders why so many women live in the same three old t-shirts.
Every tee in the collection comes in six sizes, S | AU 10 to 3XL | AU 20, and every size is the same price. If the size isn't right, you can send it back within 30 days, so the only real decision is which colour first.
6Eighteen tees in easy colours, because one good basic should go with everything you own

A comfortable tee usually comes in grey, navy or nothing. A colourful one is often thin or cut for someone thirty years younger, so it sits in the drawer while you reach for the safe one again.
This collection has eighteen tees, each in one clear colour: White, Black, Beige, Light Grey and Dark Grey for every day, Light Blue, Dusty Blue, Soft Pink and Sage Green for something softer, and Berry Red, Fuchsia and Lime Green when you want to be noticed. Wear one on its own with white trousers, or layer it under a cardigan when the evening cools. It reads as a choice you made, not a compromise you settled for.
Our Everyday Comfort Tees, against what you have been wearing
| The usual t-shirt | Our Everyday Comfort Tees | |
|---|---|---|
| Fit | Cut close, so it clings | Relaxed and comfortable, not clingy |
| Arms | Short cap sleeves, so on goes the cardigan | Half sleeves for light upper-arm coverage |
| Neckline | One shape, take it or leave it | A classic round neck or a flattering V |
| Hem | Straight and boxy, better tucked | Gently curved for an easy, untucked look |
| Sizing | Often stops at AU 14 or 16 | S | AU 10 to 3XL | AU 20, one price |
We refuse to sell a woman a t-shirt that asks her to cover it up with something else. That is the whole reason these tees are on our rails this season.
Why they're 80% off right now

The Soft Everyday Comfort Tee is marked at A$274.95 and the Soft Classic V-Neck Tee at A$299.95. For our Pre-Black Friday Sale, running until 26 November, we have taken 80% off everything in the boutique, so the round-neck tees are A$54.95 and the V-necks A$59.95. And because nobody owns just one good tee, buying more saves you more: an extra 15% when you buy 2, 20% when you buy 3 and 25% when you buy 4 or more.
These are the tees for the warm months ahead, for the market, the garden, the school pick-up and the long lunches. Our years behind the counter have taught us that once a woman finds a basic she feels neat and comfortable in, she buys it in every colour she likes and wears them until they fall apart. That is what we hope for every one of these.

We have watched a great many women pick up a simple tee, hold it up against themselves and put it back on the shelf. She likes it. That isn't the question.
What she is deciding is whether it will cling, whether her arms will be on show, and whether she will end up hiding it under a cardigan by lunchtime.
It won't, they won't, and you won't. Go and pick your colours.
